Ask a ________ is Grilla Grills new series of blog posts where we will ask pitmasters, chefs, brewers, distillers and other grill/food enthusiasts about some of our favorite topics. We’ll cover everything from favorite foods, old school recipe’s, gift ideas, personal stories and everything in between.
This time, we’re talking with pitmaster in training Rylee Wright A.K.A Steak Princess. You may recognize her from the Grilla Grills fan-run Facebook page, My Grilla Grill Smoker. She and her parents often post photos in the group showing off how this young lady can keep up with even the most impressive pitmasters out there.
We talked with Rylee for a little while about why she got into BBQ competitions and a whole lot more. There are two bonus questions with Rylee’s father at the bottom of the article. Read about it below!
A: Competition style cooking because of the people and the family feel.
“I cooked the Kickoff Classic at SCA Worlds in 2019 and just being at SCA Worlds was just so much fun … When we left I told my parents it was more fun than Disney World.”
Rylee Wright
A: I’ve cooked a brisket flat but never a whole brisket. I want to do that and then also try squirrel and duck.
A: Brisket Flat was the hardest. Chicken Breast or Steak the easiest.
A: Leg of Lamb
A: Yes, all the time!
A: Competition Judges
“If I can get to Memphis I get to cook with Malcom Reed and Mark and Emily Williams at Memphis in May. I am really excited for it. “
Rylee Wright
A: Me, of course! 🙂
A: I like cooking and having people watch me cook and asking questions.
A: Guy Fieri, and for BBQ, Mark Lambert. If I can get to Memphis I get to cook with Malcom Reed and Mark and Emily Williams at Memphis in May. I am really excited for it.
A: That would probably be a tie. I cooked the Kickoff Classic at SCA Worlds in 2019 and just being at SCA Worlds was just so much fun. I got to meet so many new people from the US and other countries and made many new friends. When we left I told my parents it was more fun than Disney World. The other would be cooking the SCA competition at The Shed. I have done two so far and they are just so much fun. You get to cook steak, ribs and turkey. Brad and the rest of the Shed family make it so much fun. Then you have your SCA family there too.

A: It’s a great feeling to have a daughter that wants to do well in the BBQ. Her mom and I are so proud of what she has accomplished in such a short time. She really enjoys beating the boys anytime she competes. She has beat me several times in SCA steak competitions and even scored higher the me on ribs at a KCBS comp one time.
A: It is a different hobby for someone her age, but she has always wanted a grill since she was 4 years old. I think we finally gave in when she was around 8 and she has been cooking ever since. She does still want a pink grill though.
She does also have normal hobbies outside of BBQ. She is a goalkeeper for her travel soccer team, she also plays goalkeeper for her middle school team, she is in honor chorus at her school and she is also involved in FCA at her school so she is a very busy kid. I think the comradery of SCA steak events and BBQ has really got her hooked. Everybody is like family when we are out there. Everybody treats her so well too.
My wife and I try to support Rylee every way possible. We let her do it all from picking out the meat she wants, to trimming and even down to the seasonings she uses. We always encourage her to try her best and that is all we can ask for.
