Entries required a recipe, picture, bio of military experience, and description of why their dish represented red, hot, & blue.
10 finalists were chosen from those entries to take part in the Thrilla at the Grilla competition at the World Food Championships 2017 in Orange Beach, Alabama for Veterans Day. Each competitor brought their own supplies and cooked on a Grilla Grill.
Of course, there had to be a twist. Much like a “Chopped” style competition, finalists would also be given a mystery basket 30 minutes prior to the competition. They would be judged partly on how well they incorporated those 3 mystery items into their dish. The name of the game would become who could best adapt and overcome the challenge at hand.
On the day of the competition, Pitmasters met on site to go head-to-head in this BBQ showdown. It was an exciting 2 hours, as competitors chopped, mixed, grilled, & plated their dishes for the judges.
In the end it was Danny Mounts who won first place with his wagyu filet cooked to perfection. He took home a Grilla Grill and $500 in prize money. Geo Phelps was runner up with his massive angus burger. He also took home a Grilla Grill and $250. Lastly, Mike Southerland placed third with his flank steak taco dish and was awarded a Grilla grill.
